Showtime has picked up the new U2 documentary From the Sky Down, directed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim.

The film which focusses on U2′s groundbreaking 1991 album Achtung Baby will feature new interviews, stories and unseen footage from recording sessions in Berlin and Dublin. The film also marks the 20th anniversary of the records release, an album described by Bono as ‘the sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree’!

Filmmaker Guggenheim, who is known for his non-fiction films Waiting for Superman, It Might Get Loud and An Inconvenient Truth, which won an Oscar in 2007 for Best Documentary Feature, said this about his latest project,

‘In the terrain of rock bands, implosion or explosion is seemingly inevitable, U2 has defied the gravitational pull towards destruction, this band has endured and thrived. The movie From The Sky Down asks the question why.’

U2 were the subject of the recent 2008 concert documentary U2 3D which grossed more than $23 million worldwide and was ranked as the fifth-highest-grossing concert film ever by Forbes.

If you have Showtime, you won’t need to head to the theater to see From the Sky Down as it will air on the cable network on Saturday, October 29th at 8 PM. The film will also be featured at the Toronto International Film Festival, opening on September 8th. From the Sky Down will be the first documentary to open the festival in 36 years.

U2 and the Edge along with Davis Guggenheim will also be discussing From The Sky Down on the bands website. You can submit questions via twitter using #THESKYDOWN and you will be able to tune in for the live chat from about 1.30pm this Friday. Check out U2.com for full details.
