British singer and songwriter Anna Calvi is busy promoting her self-titled debut album that dropped in the UK and US earlier this year. Having received critical acclaim for her retro sounding indie rock, Calvi was nominated for this years Mercury Prize award where she was up against Adele, former winner Elbow and PJ Harvey who went on to win for a second time!
Armed with her Fender Telecaster and trademark red outfits, Calvi was noticed by music legend Brian Eno who has recently wrapped up his producer role on Coldplay’s new album Mylo Xyloto. Eno became aware of Calvi through a friend and has since become an unofficial ambassador for the singer stating she is “the biggest thing since Patti Smith.”. Eno has also contributed to her album singing backing vocals on the tracks Desire and our Tune Of The Week Suzanne & I.
Having gained more and more exposure in the UK, Calvi has headed to the US to showcase her sounds. Wanting to kick things off at this years SXSW Music Festival, Calvi had to cancel due to an injury but went on to announced her first North American tour during May and June, stopping off at Late Night With David Letterman to make her debut US TV performance.
Calvi has just released the third single taken from her new album. Titled Suzanne & I, the track was dropped last week back in Britain and stands out nicely when set against the usual pop that often dominates the British music charts. The strong vocals and the sound of her Telecaster resonates through the record, giving it a cool retro sound that reminds me of a cross between Echo And The Bunnymen and a James Bond like theme track.
